How to setup CHATZILLA in the Firefox browser (Windows)


To run IRC (Internet Relay Chat) from a browser you will require the “Firefox” web browser. IRC will not work in Internet Explorer.

If you do not have the Firefox Browser you can download and install it for free. It can run con-currently with Microsoft’s browser “Explorer”. Firefox is in everyway just as good as Explorer.

To get IRC running on Firefox you will have to to download a free addon. This addon is named Chatzilla.

Make sure that you do the download in the Firefox Browser as this will install the Chatzilla addon straight into the browser automatically.

[ NOTE MICROSOFT EXPLORER WILL NOT RECOGNISE THE FILE AND WILL NOT INSTALL THE ADDON INTO FIREFOX ]

If you have installed the addon correctly a window will open telling you to restart Firefox to complete the installation .On restart you will get the option to uninstall (We don’t want that! ) Close the window

Look under tools in the Firefox menu you should find Chatzilla. If it’s there you are ready to configure Chatzilla for chatting on IRC.


To configure Chatzilla we will

1. Enter the server name for IRC.

2. Enter your user Nick ( this will be your boinc user name)

3. Enter The name of our Channel ( #cruncher-junkies )


STEP 1 - Entering the server name

Launch chatzilla from the Tools menu in the Firefox browser.

When the Chatzilla window opens click the menu that says Chatzilla

Click Preferences


and then choose the Startup Tab

In the section “Auto connect URL’s” click Add

In the prompt type: irc://dalnet/


 


Click OK and irc://dalnet/ will appear in the Auto-connect URL's panel

STEP 2 - Entering your Nick

 

Click the General Tab in the same preferences panel.

In the space for Nickname enter <your boinc user name>:.

At the bottom click apply and ok

 

 


** CLOSE DOWN CHATZILLA and restart from the Firefox tools menu **

 

The program should now automatically connect to the Dalnet server and log you in using the Nickname you entered. It will take a number of seconds to do this. You can see this occurring in the window.

When you see : <your Nick> is now +i the computer has logged into the Dalnet server


STEP 3  -  Entering the “Cruncher Junkies” channel name:

Select the Chatzilla > preferences menu again.

Below you should see Dalnet listed make sure that it is Highlighted

If it isn’t highlighted click it.

A variety of new Tabs should be visible:

Click the lists Tab

In the Auto-perform panel click Add

A prompt will appear

In the prompt type: /join #cruncher-junkies



Click OK to close the prompt.

The channel name  will appear in the Auto-perform panel.

I f you can see the channel name in the panel go to the bottom of the window click Apply and then click OK.

 

Close chatzilla and restart from the firefox tools menu:

Chatzilla is now configured to connect to the server Dalnet and open the #cruncher-junkies channel whenever it is started.
